Dollar General is continuing its determined pursuit of rival discount retailer Family Dollar Stores. This week, in the latest development in the takeover battle that pits Dollar General against rival Dollar Tree in the fight for control of Family Dollar, and presumptive dominance of the discount retailing world, Dollar General said it would extend its tender offer until Dec. 31, suggesting that the fight isn't going to be resolved in time for holiday shopping, if that matters. Dollar General's $9.7 billion offer is superior to the $9.2 billion bid from Dollar Tree, but Family Dollar prefers the latter, citing regulatory risks.
